The glass furnace is the most important equipment in glass industry. The service life of glass furnaces is important for improving the production capacity and reducing energy consumption. There are many factors that influence the service life of glass furnaces.

A reasonable design of glass furnaces can ensure the corrosion resistance of refractories in each part, especially the lining bricks. Different types of glass require different types of furnaces. The arrangement of electrodes is also important. Top plug electrodes can improve the service life of glass furnaces since it does not require the electrode brick, but it has high requirement for the crown and is easy to broke. The bottom plug electrode can reduce the erosion but it has high requirement for the equipment and design. The flat plug electrode cause higher corrosion to the glass furnace. 
 
In the terms of the service life, it is prior to use high grade refractory materials, but in the terms of cost, select the right refractory materials according to the designed service life and the areas where they are used. Fused cast AZS block is the most widely used refractory material for glass furnaces. The throat and electrode brick suffer from the severest corrosion and are key areas that influence the service life of glass furnaces. Fused cast AZS 41# and fused cast high zirconia block are always used in those areas. For other low temperature areas, AZS 33# and 36# are used. 
 
In the formula design, minimize the use of chemical components such as alkali metal ions fluoride that have corrosive effect on the glass furnaces and reduce the melting coefficient of glass to decrease the melting temperature. Generally, the higher the melting temperature of glass, the shorter the service life of the glass furnace. Strictly control the particle size of raw materials to reduce the erosion of too small powder to refractory materials. control the iron content in the raw materials and be sure to remove the iron impurities in the glass. Add appropriate amount of water to the batch materials to suppress the generation of flying materials. 
 
The installation of glass furnaces should comply with the rules and prevent deflection. The gaps between refractory bricks should be uniform and the reserved expansion joints should be reasonable. 
 
The preheating of glass furnaces has direct influence on the performance of glass furnaces. It should follow the temperature curve and be operated strictly. 
 
During the manufacturing process, it is important to keep the feeding speed, the melting temperature, the glass liquid level and discharging speed of glass liquid stable. 
 
Reasonable maintenance is also an important factor. Deal with emergencies such the redness of furnaces and glass exudation on time. Make contingency plans for furnace leakage. 
 
To prolong the service life of the glass furnaces, the design of glass furnaces and the selection of refractory materials are the key. The installation and maintenance are also important.
